I have not posted much, but I have been training and racing a lot. I have 65 days until Ironman Florida and I will be ready. I looked today at the races I've done since my last Ironman on 6/21/09 and here is the rundown (no pun intended):
IM Coeur d'Alene, 6/21/09 - 45th in Age Group (AG), 13:03:45 total time
SF Marathon 7/26/09 - 60% percentile, 3:58 total time
Malibu Sprint Tri 9/13/09 - 11th in AG
LA Olympic Tri 10/4/09 - 8th in AG
Santa Monica 13.1 (half marathon) 1/10/10 - 8th in AG
Palm Springs Century (100 mile) bike ride 2/12/10
LA Marathon 3/21/10 - 61% percentile, 3:56 total time
Hawaii 70.3 (half Ironman) Triathlon 6/5/10
SF Marathon 7/25/10 - 66% percentile, 3:39 total time (Boston Qualifying Time!)
2-mile Pier-to-Pier Swim 8/2/10 (horribly cold - no wetsuit allowed)
Santa Barbara Long Course Tri 8/28/10 - 12th in AG
Plans: Malibu Olympic Tri 9/11/10 (goal is top 10 in AG)
Malibu Sprint Tri Relay (run leg) 9/12/10 (goal is top 5 for co-ed teams)
IM Florida 11/6/10 (goal is sub-12:30 finish, maybe sub-12:00, maybe Kona qualifier)
It has been a great though cold summer. My fundraising gained new steam this week with a very large potential donor - very exciting - please stay tuned. Additionally, I was contacted by Janus Funds and interviewed for an athlete spotlight article. I was able to talk about why I got involved with Kids of Kilimanjaro, why I got into Ironman, and how I manage the schedule with my job in investment management. When I was asked what the biggest lesson I learned from Ironman, I answered 'patience.' It is knowing that a 5-hour bike ride is going to take 5 hours no matter how hard I push, and that I've got to get my brain as well as my body to cooperate with the task at hand. It carries over very well to my professional life, where it is often best to follow the course of a conversation rather than jump to the end conclusion, because the journey can allow me to learn more about my client's feelings, fears, hopes, goals, etc. regarding an investment, an aspect of their estate plan, or other.

To give you an idea of my typical schedule (and you'll quickly see that there isn't much typical about it): last Friday afternoon I drove to Santa Barbara for 2 client meetings before checking in with the triathlon to pick up my race numbers, T-shirt, swim cap and timing chip. Then I checked into my hotel, unloaded my bike and other equipment and clothing, then met up with some LA Tri Club friends for a healthy dinner in and an early bed time. Up at 5am Saturday, we organized our bike and run gear in the transition area, then put on wet suits, sipped coffee, nibbled at energy bars, then "warmed up" in the 57-degree water before starting the race. A cold 1-mile swim, then a hilly and beautiful 35-mile bike, then a 10-mile out-and-back run along the coast and 4 hours and 5 minutes later I was done. A pool party of sorts - lots of stretching, race recounting - at our hotel, then dinner in Santa Barbara and then dancing. A drive home along the coast Sunday delivered me back to Santa Monica to pick up dry cleaning, get my nails done, answer my mail, and pack for 2 days on the road for work. Monday morning I caught a 6am flight to San Fran, drove to Napa for a meeting, then dinner in San Francisco with friends and clients. Tuesday morning I drove to Palo Alto for a meeting, then to Campbell for a meeting and lunch. Then back to Palo Alto for another meeting, then a flight home from San Jose. Wednesday morning I met the tri club at the beach in Santa Monica at 6:15am in the dense fog and semi dark for an ocean swim. Then work for 8 hours (a somewhat short day), then a brick workout on my bike trainer at the track. Then sushi for dinner with a friend, then bed. Today I did a light weights workout then hit the office. Tonight I have a dinner out, then a 6am swim then run tomorrow morning. Saturday at 7:30am will be our normal tri club bike ride for a few hours, followed by a short run. Sunday will be a longer run, then hopefully a little time to enjoy the holiday weekend.
I'll be back soon. Until then I'll be tri'ing hard!
